In a nutshell
An avalanche is always very difficult to manage, so the idea here is to have as many tools at your disposal as possible to avoid this situation.
Improve your decision-making skills: from preparing for the outing or in the field, to the ascent and descent, take control of your day.
Whatever your level, this group workshop will help you understand the thought processes and reasoning needed to plan and lead an outing in the field like a professional.
Roadbook
For many years, Altitude Guides have been participating in this unique training programme, the concept for which was brought to them by a Scandinavian friend. The idea is to involve participants and let them choose the outing they think is best for them. The criteria are primarily good snow for maximum enjoyment and safety, but that’s not all. Each person’s physical and technical abilities are also very important. Being in a group with a goal that suits you is essential in the mountains. In the field, there will be many key decisions to make. And at the end of the day, debriefing with the other groups is always very important in order to improve your knowledge and, above all, to ski even better the next day!
Day 1: Workshops led by guides: avalanche rescue, snow science and off-piste skiing techniques, evening of theory and preparation for outings by participants in consultation with guides.
Days 2 and 3: In small teams with a guide, each group organises its freerando outing in the valley based on the preparations and debriefings from the previous day. Evening session for participants to report back on conditions and prepare for the next day’s outing.
-> Meeting point: Thursday 15 January 2026 from 6pm at the Altitude premises to collect your accommodation and equipment.
This training course emphasises debriefings after each outing to find out how everyone felt about the situations encountered during the day. This allows all participants to learn from their experiences. It also provides an overview of snow and avalanche conditions across a large mountain range.
All this takes place in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
We gather after the day and share our information in a dedicated room. We all have dinner together and take the opportunity to plan the next day.
Our only goal after an outing is to share smiles and photos with a beer in hand. Nothing else. And for that, you have to train!
