Roadbook
Mountain skiing or freeriding requires a specific set of skills. Terrain and snow conditions can change from one day to the next, and a safe place can become a death trap in a matter of hours. Knowing how to make decisions and adapt to current conditions and the group you are skiing with is therefore essential.
In collaboration with our partners Ortovox and ANENA, we offer various training courses for off-piste skiing and ski touring. In addition to learning how to avoid dangers, you will become more competent and effective in the event of an accident. You will learn how to use your safety kit, organise a rescue operation and administer first aid.
…and we will keep in mind that a good day’s skiing always starts with a good plan!
Skiing is an individual activity, but if you want to practise it as safely as possible, it’s best not to be alone… An effective group in case of problems consists of 3 to 6 people. This means you need to understand how group decision-making works, including its pitfalls. Identifying key decision-making moments, giving everyone a chance to speak, listening without already having made up your mind… these are all factors that will help you make the right decision! After all, what could be better than a great day of skiing with friends where everyone feels comfortable and safe?
Despite all our efforts to anticipate dangers, the mountains in winter harbour many pitfalls. In the event of an avalanche, it has been proven that a trained group significantly increases the chances of survival for those buried. We offer scenarios that closely resemble real-life situations so that you can train individually, but also understand that good group communication is the key to a happy outcome.
To be able to travel in the mountains in winter, good planning is essential. Preparing the right equipment, checking the weather forecast and avalanche risk reports are all essential. Once on the ground, you will need to organise the group, read the terrain, interpret the signs of danger and successfully navigate around any questionable areas. And besides, the satisfaction of having listened to and adapted to the snow conditions of the day will replace that of reaching the summit if you had to turn back before.
For many years, Altitude Guides have been participating in this unique training programme, the concept for which was brought to them by a Scandinavian friend. The idea is to involve participants and let them choose the outing they think is best for them. The criteria are primarily good snow for maximum enjoyment and safety, but that’s not all. Each person’s physical and technical abilities are also very important. Being in a group with a goal that suits you is essential in the mountains. In the field, there will be many key decisions to make. And at the end of the day, debriefing with the other groups is always very important in order to improve your knowledge and, above all, to ski even better the next day!
